In July Dr Mackenzie met the Prime Minister, David Cameron, when he visited Bedford. He came specially to meet with GPs who were embracing innovation in providing healthcare in Bedford and to discuss the future of the NHS.
The coalition Government has produced a White Paper – Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS – which sets out the Government’s long-term vision for the future of the NHS.
A central theme of the paper involves putting GPs at the heart of the NHS where they can directly influence the way NHS services are commissioned and provided. This would be achieved by GP practices grouping together to form consortia.
Wootton Vale Healthy Living Centre is already a member of a local group of GP’s, known as Horizon Health. This organisation was founded three years ago by Dr Mackenzie who, as retired chair, still plays a key role as a clinical executive director.
Dr Mackenzie commented that the meeting with Mr Cameron was frank and open and that suggestions made were positively received. She further told Mr Cameron that Horizon Health were ready and prepared to meet the challenges to improve the care of patients in Bedfordshire.
